Metallica have previewed new song ‘Moth Into Flame’ as part of the trailer for their new album ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct’.
The song starts at the 2min 07secs point of the trailer. It features James Hetfield singing: “Blacked-out pop queen/Amphetamine/The screams crashed in the silence”. The trailer ends with a clip from their 2013 film Through The Never.
‘Moth Into Flame’ is the second song Metallica have previewed from ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct’, following ‘Hardwired’ a week ago. It’s the band’s first full album since 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic’. It’s produced by Hetfield with drummer Lars Ulrich and regular Metallica producer Greg Fidelman.
The eight-year wait since ‘Death Magnetic’ is the longest gap in albums of Metallica’s career, though they also made joint album ‘Lulu’ with Lou Reed in 2011. Part of the reason for the delay is that guitarist Kirk Hammett lost an iPhone with the riffs he’d written for the album.
Ulrich told Rolling Stone the new album is simpler than ‘Death Magnetic’. He said: “We introduce a mood and stick to it, rather than songs we've done where one riff happens and we go over here and then over there and it becomes a journey through all these different soundscapes. The songs are more linear. It cruises along a little bit more than the last record.”
